Charles Sturt Museum

Welcome to the Charles Sturt Museum. Located in the Adelaide suburb of Grange, South Australia, the Museum is dedicated to preserving and sharing the remarkable history of Captain Charles Sturt, one of Australia’s most significant explorers.

The Museum is open to the public on the first and third Sunday afternoons of each month when voluntary guides will show you through the house and exhibition.

Mid-week guided tours for groups are available by prior arrangement. These guided experiences offer an enriching opportunity for visitors of all ages, including families, history enthusiasts, clubs and those with an interest in South Australia’s colonial past.

At the heart of the precinct is The Grange, Captain Sturt’s historic family residence, where he lived from 1840 to 1853. This carefully preserved home is surrounded by heritage gardens and picturesque parkland, providing a unique insight into 19th-century life.

The Museum's Visitor Centre, allows guests to explore a range of exhibits, rare artefacts, and interpretive displays detailing Sturt’s expeditions and family life.

The Charles Sturt Museum offers visitors an engaging and informative experience, combining rich history with a serene and welcoming setting.

Visitor Centre

A visit to the Charles Sturt Museum provides the opportunity to experience the peaceful setting and be welcomed into this State Heritage listed home as it would have appeared in those early days of settlement.

Our new Visitor Centre, attached to the house, showcases the story of Captain Charles Sturt, along with a fascinating display of historical artefacts and interpretive and multimedia displays.

It was officially opened on Sunday 11th December 2022 by Her Excellency, The Governor of South Australia, Frances Adamson AO.

The exhibition "Antipodean Dreams" by designer Denise Schumann OAM, was created to tell the story of Captain Charles Sturt, as explorer and as a man deeply committed to scientific discovery.

We encourage everyone to visit not only to see the Centre and exhibition, but The Grange homestead and heritage garden.
